Personally I would rather deal with the part time inspectors that run an EC business as well.
They fully remember the value of time.
I don't have an issue with partime EC/Inspectors. They clearly know the code better and have common sense. But as a partime inspector are they paid per inspection or salary?

In one small town here there is an EC as a partime inspector. & one of my closest competitors. He red tag'd a final because I had 2 breakers not labeled. I wans't even working on the panel, it was just adding 8 recessed cans, He would not return my calls. $25 reinspection fee. Yea, he knows the value of time & it wasn't worth my time to wait for him to call back or push the issue.
As long as he's inspecting there I'll never permit another thing there!

Jeff,
I'm only telling you what our contractors' association mentions at each meeting. These violations are enforcable and fines do get imposed. The first one is a $1000.00 slap on the hand. I haven't heard of any issues that go beyond that because they usually pay up but if you scoff at the law I'm sure that there will be jail time. Somewhere along the line all states should crack down on bootlegged work as far as I'm concerned. Otherwise, why bother getting a license ?

Regards,

Phil

I couldn't agree more. Yeah, the $1000 isn't much of a deterrent, but I would think that jail time would be, not to mention getting a felony conviction on your record. Usually any crime that is classified as a felony is one that the state is serious about. But with prison overcrowding, I can't imagine there's a big push to lock up unlicensed handymen.

Not saying they ignore the rules but usually when they tell me they will see me at 4:15 PM that is when they will be there.

The full time guys are more like the cable company "I'll be there when I get there" when asked what time to meet them.

That kind of thing varies around here. Our inspectors are prohibited from having anything else to do with the electrical trade, so they are all pretty much full-timers. The state inspectors will come out the same day after I call them first thing in the morning, but they generally won't commit to a time other than "today." But no one is required to be there for the inspection, so as long as to kind of arrangements are made to give the inspector access (key under the mat, lock box, HO is home, etc.), it all works out.

I had a rough-in inspection Friday with a city inspector, and she told me she'd be there between 9:30 and 10:00 AM, and she showed up shortly after 9:30. I had to be there because the HO wasn't home, and the only access they would accept is me being there with a key.

Celtic,

The ones without a license, are now charged with multiple violations, thanks to the new trainning of local enforcement, and yes some are visiting the county lock up, but as soon as they get there, they always find the money to pay the fines, still a two night stay there is not a fun time, from what i understand it's not just electricians, but the Mr slick GC's working without permits are getting taged.

I'm sure that's based on your vast experiences.

LOL
j/k
:D

When dealing with the safety of people and property, those in violation of the law should be punished....plain and simple.
