NM-B cables through studs

OK I think I see and agree.
How likely would it be that 5 - 12-2 cables would be in one hole through successive studs. That number of cables would equal 10 current carrying conductors. And IF they stayed bundled between the holes then derating would need to be addressed. I see your point and agree it's a big if. Likely to happen ????? Not really.

What?????
This is nothing. This threads only three pages long. Sit back and wait to see some of the "professionals posters" here that have been around for a while. They reach right through the monitor and slap you upside the head. Then they call your boss and tell him you're worthless except hand trenching.

Oh Yeah Welcome to the forum :D

Re: NM-B cables through studs

Even if you derate, and that is not required, the ampacity of 12-2 NMB is 30 amperes, and as long as after derating it protected at no more than 20 amperers it is allowed. See 334.80.
It would take many cables to go below the 20 amperes for 12 AWG NM-B after derating.

Larry, that was great!

Re: NM-B cables through studs

There have been some very good points made on this topic in this thread.

It's a long one but worth reading.

I think it was Charlie E. that points out that in a single family dwelling even if you bundle all the 15 and 20 amp circuits you're not likely to find enough load at any given time to make derating necessary to protect the conductors.

I don't necessarily agree. I think it would depend on the load bearing properties. I've seen plumbers drill a 3&1/2" hole in a 2x4 and hold both sides of the stud together with looong nail plates.

Re: NM-B cables through studs

Here we go again with the bundling issue where romex is run in multiples thru studs. Somebody please tell us where this has EVER led to an electrical related fire in a dwelling where the circuits in question were not overloaded due to misuse or miswiring on one of those circuits.

Re: NM-B cables through studs

If anyone calls my inspectors and points this out I`ll search you out and feed you seu staples :D

I suppose that you don't use these rings at all due to the lack of your answer
No, the lack of answer was due to the fact I gave up on this thread, it is obvious you and I will never agree on this bundling issue.

I know what is expected in the states I work and I am comfortable with that. :)

As far as bridle rings yes I use them by the hundreds.

I agree, in reality in a residence the cables will not be loaded enough to cause a problem.

But are we talking about what the NEC requires or what is really needed? :)

Re: NM-B cables through studs

Thank you for responding Bob.
We were discussing this and I was asked if I had ever used ?bridle rings? before. I have used them several times but they were the same rings used over several different times. I have four of them, two on the collar and two on the back of the harness.

Dan, a warm blood, stands at 17 hands and is one of the best horses we have. His gate is smooth and I enjoy his pace as he covers the road at a trot.

This is my only experience with ?bridle rings? Again thanks for the response.

Re: NM-B cables through studs

don't bridle rings allow nm or mc to be bent tighter than allowed, especially at 4" horizontal runs, numerous cables bearing down on bottom runs??

What kind of creature is that hanging from the ring in the graphic you posted? A mouse?
That would be a "Cable Cat".

It is the name of a line of data cable supports.

Re: NM-B cables through studs

data cable support???? is that within the guide lines that take LV away from the NEC requirements it started with MC and ended with LV ;)
