Does anyone know specifically if NM cable is permitted to be painted? If it is oil based product or alcohol based? This is in reference to existing Romex that is undamaged in a small fire damaged home, where the home had to be sprayed in a smoke mitigated primer.

What a great question, original.
I would use a water based "latex" paint. There is times where, IMO, it should be painted, I did a job a few years ago and the attic had a window that let UV rays hit the NM, my fix was to have the painter spray the NM to protect it. I would be concernd about an oil based paint causing the jacketing to break down.
You could always try to get an answer from "South wire" but good luck there.

.....among other things, wasn't there something about the labeling of the cable that prevented it from being painted?

Why does it need to be painted?

If that were true, every house wired with NM would be in violation, unless they were not painted. I have yet to see a house painter NOT paint the wires in the boxes.

Wouldn't it be painted on just one side? You would still be able to read the other side if you had to. I have seem alot of baements where HO has painted the ceiling instead of putting in a drop ceiling.

So how do you read the labeling once Sheetrock is in place?

Same principal as stripping the sheath of off NM cable and running it in conduit, no markings on the conductors. I've seen this in threads here but haven't heard of any actual cases here.

Thanks

Thanks

thank you all for you responses. Had an electrician turn down a job because of the issue I expressed and couldn't find the specific (oil based, alcohol based ) products in the NEC and thought maybe I need to look into the NESC. Appreciate it
