NM cable

I’m looking to staple NM cable horizontally between the 6” x6”posts on a pole barn.

I can staple to the back side of the 2”x4” that has the exterior steel screwed to.

The steel is in place, no additional work to be done on the outside.

Would it make sense to add some pcs of 2”x4” to the horizontals thus giving me 3” off the face of the sheet metal vs 1 1/2”?

Probably over thinking it but what if something got mounted to the exterior

Thoughts appreciated.
Thanks

If it is a pole barn wouldn't it be a damp location? or is it enclosed
It’s pole barn construction as far as using 6”x6” posts.
exterior walls are firred out .
- insulated exterior walls
- finished walls w/ 1/2” osb
- finished ceiling corrugated metal.
- shingled roof.

I've wired several of these. I ran the NM stapled to the horizontal boards that the sheet metal is screwed to. No more danger than NM ran through bored holes in the studs in a house. Actually less danger since the boards are 1-1/2".

Some have only 3 sides, in which case some portion might be damp or even wet. But we usually call those “loafing sheds”, not pole barns, even though they use the same construction methods.

In any event, Bill has addressed his question.
