I would like to get some feed back in how inspectors apply article 300.4 protection from physical damage in roof that have a scuttle hole and appliances up in the attic to maintain them. Alot of the contractors here just want to run their wire accross the cieling joist.. and also many of the roof heights. are between 4-10 feet high which really makes the wire to be step on if you ever need to repair or do any kind of work in the attic. I would appreciate your help.

Take a look at 334.23. This will send you to 320.23.

320.23(A) tells you that where run across the top of floor joists, or within 7 feet of floor or floor joists across the face of rafters or studding, in attics and roof spaces that are accessible, the cable shall be protected by substantial guard strips that are at least as high as the cable. Where this space is not accessible by permanent stairs or ladders, protection shall only be required within 6 feet of the scuttle hole or attic entrance.
