Does anyone (besides me) have a problem with a plug on the end of NM? :D

It is funny you should say that. I believe one of the reasons some do not use the transfer switch, is they are not sure what it really does or how it does it, so they do not use it... unless it comes with the generator.

I will say that the understanding of this is becoming more common place, just as generators are.

Re: NM & plug

I don't need a transfer swith thingy. I bought some instructions once on ebay, that show'd me how to hook up my generator through my dryer plug em in. Now I've got power to my whole house and I've saved hundreds that would have went to some overpriced lektrishun.

110.(3) does it.

UL only lists these for flexible cord, of course you won't find that in the NEC you have to look at the UL White book.

I had never heard of the UL white book for the first 15 years of working in the trade, I hope the instructors now make it clear we have to look at these other sources of info.

Every single class and every seminar, I start with a list of other documents that they should have for reference... the UL White Book is referenced for all but the Theory class. ;)

Re: NM & plug

Ok I'll say it. Maybe it is not legal. But it is certainly not a hazard in the application shown. I have done it and I would and will do it again.

Sometimes these "rules" can be far more restrictive than they need to be. It is a sad commentary on society that common sense can not be part of the equation anymore. We must all be literally held by the hand to get through an installation.

I have to go clear the tools out of my truck now so I can fit all the books I have to read before I can do a job.

Re: NM & plug

Of course, you say that without seeing a broader view of it, Scott. I doubt you'd do that in a hallway, with the NM sticking out like that. ;)

The thing is, you can do the same thing legally for pennies more - a j-box with a real cord, that the cap was designed for. Problem solved.

It's probably better for the lurker's sake to encourage alternatives, before acceptance.
