Scott I agree with you to a point, I have a NM cable into a plug in my own garage (it was a step up from the solid 12 being stuck into an outlet ), it works fine and I do not see it as a hazard.

All the same I would never do the same thing while 'on the clock'. Whoever hired us (instead of doing themselves) is paying us to do it right no matter how many books I have to look at to figure it out.
