If a NM cable is installed in a wood stud wall then turned out thru a hole in the brick to an exterior surface mounrted box (such as a disconnect), is it a requirement that the section of NM thur the brick wall be sleeved ?

No, and I never do... but I can guarantee someone will say differently...

I'll add my two cents. If the nm is poured in place as the masonry is going up, then a sleeve is required but if the the wall was drilled, then no.

I am going to stir the pot a little and say it needs to be sleeved per Section 110.11 and also 334.12(B)(2) or maybe 334.12(B)(3)

Flame on

I wouldn't call a hole drilled through masonry a shallow chase (it's not 'covered', either), nor consider the wire 'embedded' in the hole.

Where is masonry considered 'deteriorating' to NM?

Not flaming, just commenting and asking.

If 110.11 were true, how would sleeving it stop it from still being a 110.11 violation?

In both 334.12(B)2 or 3 there talking about the nm being embedded, and we all agreed it would need sleeves

Masonry can eat holes in human skin, I think it could eat NM as well.
Also if you look at some of the reccesed boxes and things that Arlington makes they always include a sleeve piece for where the cable goes thru the block/brick.

I do always sleeve myself in these cases, but I do not feel like it is really a big deal. For me it is mainly protection of the NM from the masons instead of the masonry.

I really did not want to let stickboy down on the above comment

 Thanks...

I know I've done many thousands of service calls, and not one has been due to the deleterious effects of masonry on NM cable. Sleep well.

I agree!

I haven't had a call back yet!

NM and human skin are a little different. Look at what 600volts and some amperage can do to human skin. What table do we use when derating skin in a load calc. 60 or 75 degree column ?

skin effect
