No ground present at devices

Is it legal to use a neutral on a device ground screw , lets a GFCI , it will show grounding, or a recptacle .....know this is a two wire system , romex too ...
 
Well Section 210-7(d) Branch Circuits

clarifies that where no grounding means exist you can install in accordance 250-50 (b) a non-grounded receptacle , a GFCI and or a grounding type receptacles , but you must mark this no equipment ground .... do you agree?
 
Well when you put your ground wire to the neutral bar in a panel, and the electrical utility company does the same ? this would make the the device show a ground ?
 
Where a grounding means does not exist in a receptacle enclosure you are permitted to install a non-grounding receptacle, a GFCI receptacle marked with "No equipment ground".

No where in 210-7(d) does it permit connecting the neutral conductor to the equipment grounding terminal on the receptacle.

Also 250-50 is titled "Grounding electrode system" and has nothing to do with receptacle grounding.

Are you familiar with the term "bootleg ground"? If not then it's a good idea to become familiar with it.


How would you ever inspect the electrical system of a house if you don't know what to look for? Every electrician needs to know enought to know if an installation is safe or not. Tricking a cheap tester means nothing and a bootleg ground is illegal and dangerous.

The better an more expensive testers will spot a bootleg ground or you can just pull the receptacles and look for them.
 
Ive seen this before older house plug in tester to 3 prong receptical tests good for ground. Pull receptical and there it is neutral pigtailed onto the ground screw and this house was inspected by a home inspector and all the recepticals are grounded according to the report. You can use that gfci for 2 wire system you just cant hook the neutral to the ground screw it must remain ungrounded unless you provide one .
 
Here's why we don't bring a green screw to a neutral.

I just made a service call yesterday. The woman claims she got shocked by touching the cover plate screw. When I removed the plate someone had installed a bare wire on the grounding screw of the switch and it was touching the hot side of the switch. There was no grounding conductors in the system so the metal box was hot also just waiting for the rite time. The sad thing is that it was rite next to the kitchen sink. This could have been really bad.

Yes, very nice. Although some of the arrows are turned around, it still gets the point across.

The notation is also just a little harsh. Maybe "Previously Live Person" would be a little more politically correct :)
