Saw this the other day - sump pump installed by a "known" waterproofing contractor. Guess they wanted to save the HO the cost of a licensed electrical contractor.

"BX" used to support very long extension cord, via direct contact and a metal hanger.

By the way, extension cord grounding prong was removed before being inserted into 2-prong outlet in the lampholder.

Having dealt with an unscrupulous waterproofer in the past I don't think that this one cared what happened after he left. The pump worked and he probably got paid.
 
Before I became an electrician, I purchased a water softener and iron filter for my house, both of which required a 120V receptacle. The salesman recommended a similar method to get the power, fortunately I had other advisors and installed a receptacle in a better (albeit not perfect) manner.

I imagine this happens every day across the country.
 
I saw a sump pump that beat that last summer. Extension cord ran out the access hatch, across the roof, to a sump pump at the low spot on the roof. The pump discharge went into a plumbing vent pipe.

I think would have had the plumbers shaking their heads too.

At least they wrapped the plug end in tape and saran wrap. That sealed a lot of water into the plug ends.

Why remove the ground prong when you can just use a cheater?

Also, there are lampholders like that with grounded outlets.

I once saw an adapter to give 2 outlets (ungrounded of course) from a lampholder...as an aside, I noticed one of these in a store once had a UL mark on it, despite being a direct code violation...and had 2 fluorescent fixtures plugged into it using cheaters. The lights work without a ground.
 
It's sad that an otherwise great person will sell their soul as soon as money

enters the picture, and then say it's just business!!
 
You'd think they could have at least used a shorter extension cord ...

Perhaps they went to the same electrical school as the guy who did this?
