To answer your question --- what is noise? It anything that is not the desired signal.
There are several ways noise can be coupled into a system --- capacitive --- inductive --- radiated (radio frequencies) --- coupling thru a common impedance (typically ground path noise).
As has been described by others you probably have ground loops.
