The Fluke "voltstick" is very reliable. I've never had it not pick up live voltage when properly placed next to the hot conductor. I have had it pick up induced voltage on a very rare occasion or two. Not the tools fault as it was doing it's job. I always test it on a known hot before using it for say a few hours to trim.

my fave is the GB volt-alert, as it fits well in my "pock-kits" pouch along with my knife. It's also tough, I've killed a few other ones. It's also not prone to lighting up all over in a box with some hot, some not.
