Educate me please. I'm lost. What is this condensate pump? I'm thinking this is a hot air furnace with an air conditioner, and the pump picks up the water that drops out of the cooled air?

Yes they are used for that, but high efficiency gas furnaces also develop condensation in the exhaust, and it is significant enough amount it needs drained away. If there is no drain available this pump is installed to "lift" that water to a place where it can go to a drain.
