Good point, these cans are only useful on the first floor of a two story dwelling, or a finished basement.

A boy that works for me just took the sfd test he said it was a 1/4". I thought for sure code required three inches. Any body know where to find that in the code book.
 
In NEC 410.66(A) (1)
Non Ic requires 1/2" from combustible materials



410.66(A)(2)(B)
Non IC shall not have insulation installed witihin 3"

From '05 NEC. '08 Changes a bit but the idea is the same.
 
As stated above, other requirements may preclude the use of the non IC cans.

I believe the building codes in the interest of energy conservation, require not only an IC listed, but air tight fixture when going through the building "envelope". I can't recall an air tight fixture that is not also listed as IC.

The days of forming an enclosure with chicken wire are long gone.
