That's my first choice. I use a top KO so water won't follow the wire.

How will you mount it ? you cant drill a hole in the non metallic and let a metal screw exit . . Ive seen the small plastic with a 1/2 thread in both ends , but I am not sure of their intended use but I believe it is surface mount.

The mortar seems to grip the box's nail-holding nubs, as well as the nails themselves, just fine.

Yes, I usually use standard nail-on boxes.
