I was just kidding about the equation. Your use of the equation was a great way of prompting more comments . . . it is what got me to comment. I do like the way you are able to spur more comments.
I would also like to know the origin of this question.

I actually broke out pen and paper to "prove" the equations...my example was slightly less than accurate .

How long would the testing examiner allow to take a quiz of a quantity of 50 of similar types of questions like the one that started this thread: a).50 minutes b).50 hours c).50 days d). all of the above ? :grin:

If D = A+B+C, and C = A+B+D, wouldn't D=C?

If we solve the first equation for C we get C= -A-B+D.

Let's add the 2 equations togther
C=-A-B+D
C= A+B+D

2C= 2D
C=D

Lets see, a).50 minutes= 30 seconds b).50 hours= 30 minutes c).50 days= 12 hours and d). all of the above ? About 12 hours of indecision sounds about right, so I say "C".

I have a copy of the first edition of Mike?s Electrician?s Exam Preparation. It is based on the 1999 NEC . . . when dots were dashes and Article 314 was 370. The question is the same and the answer in the back of the book is the same. This tells us the answer most likely is not a typo.

In Mike?s defense, this question probably came from the Block and Associates master or journeyman electrician?s exam. Just because a question is on an exam, does not mean the exam providers will have the correct answer. I feel that most, if not all, exam providers have a 1 to 3 percent error in answers to their exams.

I have been teaching electrical exam prep classes for 19 years, and have taken more than 40 master (or contractor) electrical exams. Controversial questions like this have always been around. Hopefully, this question has been deleted, reworded, or the answer has been corrected.

This question is in the 2005 Exam Prep book, page 227 # 2, and the answer key was corrected to answer (d)

For 2008 we will also add the word "nonmetallic" in front of "raceways"
