nonmetallic sheathed cable color identification

I saw some ordinary (old 60 degree) NM in a place a while ago that was grey. Looked superficially like UF until you took a closer look at it.

I used to joke with helpers that if NM was color coded that you could teach a monkey to wire a house :p Guess someone was listening.I was under the impression that the color coding was for inspectors and not the installers.Look know what is installed and move on.Installers have a hands on with the cable assys.therefore they know what gauge they are using.I for one like the color coding. As I can see what is being installed by others that might not be sure what to use in certain cases.Sad but all to true.

But for this to work, the color would have to be mandated by some standard. Now if I was a sleazy manufacturer and wanted to supply sleazy contractors I would market #14 with a yellow jacket.
