I know what you mean Pierre.
One apprentice spent about 3 years doing nothing but fueling our on site vehicles....fortunately for him, he was a quick study and picked up quickly when he turned in the fuel truck keys.

On a job where I was a JW doing resi. condos, there was a small amount of EMT to run [100' +/- of 3/4" ]....the foreman ordered a "little kicker" from the shop...he gave me the EMT job and the kicker ~ I left the kicker in the trailer and took the bender instead. He was amazed it was done quickly w/o the kicker. I'm guessing the Foreman spent the bulk of his career slinging BX in condos.

I agree, the cubs have to pay their dues, but, if they spend all that time doing monkey work, it will be that much longer before they are a productive employee.
I get my cubs hands pulling, trimming or whatever from day one if possible. If there is digging, or rat work, they will do it, just not waste all time doing only that.

I know apprentices who have worked 4 years humping pipe, etc... making more money (due to overtime) than some mechanics and really did not know the difference in wiring a switch or receptacle. I am aware that the local has changed the apprentiship program to help reduce these issues. In some other shops, they may be on condo/house projects for years and not get very extensive training.
NY must have something different going on in the trades programs, the locals around here, have tough standards for the apprentice programs, they cover everything, and I mean everything by the book, the non union, labor department apprentice programs, are also tough and require years of both class room and on job training, even if a guy is not learning in the field, what was he doing in class? makes you wonder, we put guys thru both programs over the years, and both programs produced so pretty good guys.

I wish I knew what a "Kicker" was. Maybe I have a "Kicker".

Maybe my "Kicker" doesn't have a sticker on it that says, "Kicker."

I wonder if my "Kicker" ever had a sticker that said it was a "Kicker."

If my "Kicker" would of had a sticker that said, "Kicker"

I bet I'd still be calling it a "Kicker" instead of something else.

What is a "Kicker"?

Good question.
I don't know either.

Sounds like you have a person who's job is kicking EMT into shape..

You know....Lay the EMT along the wall and kick the bends in it.
Apparently, they come in different sizes too:grin:.
