Now what will we call them.

Someone asked what we carry. I just have a Sperry DMM that does acv, dcv, amp clamp (up to 200) and con. I know sperry is a cheap&$^# thing because all the other JM tell me so, with their fancy fluke meters! I got kids to feed and this was a gift so it cost me nada... ;)

Oh, and I lost the leads. If anyone wants to send me a spare set... I'm using two 12" bits of #12 (black and white!) right now... :D

If you can find some #16 stranded its a little more flexable

You deserve to use that #12, then. If you can't keep care of the stuff you already have, you're sure not going to get any freebies from any reasonable person.

My guess is you have never worked in an electronics assembly plant, there are few humans involved. The printed circuit board would be entirely produced by machine.

Bob - no I haven't - but I doubt there are too many humans on the 'wiggy line' either..... A soloniod, two test leads, a neon lamp and two halves of a shell - done.... I'm speculating of course, but IMO a human is maybe involved in testing every 50th one by picking one up and touching the leads to a pair of live bolts and sending it on its way...

I doubt they are canceling production on by what you can tell here is a popular product soley by costs alone - As it is obvious that some of us would be willing to pay more to keep it around - as there are some it would seem who wouldn't be caught dead using a DMM. Screaming - "From My Cold Dead Hands!!!!"

I'm sure the insurance companies had more to do with it.... For them to say so would be admission to liability for the millions that are already out there.....

My thoughts exactly, I don't get it.

I don't understand this. Why would insurance companies get involved?

Pass through voltage from one lead to another - not that DMM's wont, but will do it at lower current levels - just a thought.....

Hmmm.
" Agreed.
"I never understood why anyone would carry a Wiggy when the Vol-Con did both"

Could it be tradition? habit?
90+/- years of mfg. vs. how many years for Vol-Con?

Or....why does/did Ideal make a 'yellow Wiggy' ? basically a Vol-Con without the 'Con'

I own, and use/used both over the years....yes the Ideal does 2 things and that was and is great, but 95% of the sparkies call the Vol-Con a "wiggy"

Sq D Schneider should wait for the 100th anniversary!

To name something *CON* is pretty stupid. It carries a subliminal message of mistrust.

Okay, here's my input:

I prefer my Knopp K-60 for almost all troubleshooting. All I usually need to know is the presence of power. If I need to know the exact voltage, I break out the voltmeter.

I use a non-contact tester when I want to do a quick check for power without having to remove wirenuts, etc. Once I've narrowed it down, I check again with one of the above.

If I need a continuity tester, I use an audible continuity tester. What I don't understand is how you determine whether the Volcon is indicating voltage or continuity.

One LED glows if there is continuity, two glow if it's voltage, and it doesn't vibrate for continuity. My vol-con is audible too.

The only catch is, it's answering a yes or no question - is there any continuity? It will readily read through loads, and you can't tell the difference. It will read through me if I push the leads into my thumbs, just a little ways.

I've gotten false positives through my fingers while troubleshooting, by accident. "Hey, I shouldn't be getting continuity on that?!?"

I was testing a bunch of spare fuses in a restaurant that they had laying all over the electrical room. I wanted to throw out the bad one's. I laid them on a table and started to test them at each end when I realized that I had them laid on a stainless steel table. Talk about a Duh! moment.

I suspect that Ideal will benefit from this discontinuation.
I suspect so. The T5 has been the "new Wiggy" for quite a few years now in the minds of many, with the exception of the phantom voltage issue. Seems like they've got that sorted now too.

P.S. I'm now rated at 65K!
