i run a small firm in south florida and am doing a nail spa it is only 2'000 sq ft. the inspector has told me i need occupant sensors to conform with florida building code chapter 13. i have read this code and am still unsure any help out there.

note: the spa i'm doing is only 200 sq ft but the whole building is about 10'000 sq ft divided by fire walls.
 
I am not familiar with the FL codes but much of them are in line with the I-Codes. The IECC (Energy) requires automatic lighting shut off in "buildings" more than 5,000 sq. feet.

You will probably need an occupancy sensor that turns off the lighting within 30minutes of leaving the space.

The FL code may mimick the IECC.
 
I believe NYS has the 3rd most strigent energy codes in the USA. Yet, unless it is on the prints, it is rarely installed. I would say the only 40% of the electricians here are aware of the requirements, and maybe 10% even know where to look the requirements up.

The 5000 SqFt requirement is for the minimum size of the building, then they break it down to the size of the individual rooms within the building.

If you do not have a copy of the Energy Conservation Construction Code of NYS, I have an extra one I can give to you early this week.
It is not too difficult for the 'standard types' of requirements, but then there is the "engineering" portion which is much more complicated for larger/more complex buildings. There is a computer program that can be had that I believe helps in the design aspect of these larger buildings.

Yes, because it is a "building". There are no exceptions for fire walls. That is the way it is written. Someone else may have another interpretation.

cheers guys i think this area should be open to owners requirments, due to the exept rules of personal injury. in this case a spa were waxing, electric filling of nails and chemicals being used.
