I’ve often wondered what the relationship is between the length of or “rings” of porcelain that make-up a distribution line insulator to the voltage of the lines. Is there a rule-of thumb?

I imagine it's really about surface distance, so both the quantity and diameter affect voltage rating.
 
with my local utilities, I have always used a ball park of 1 ring =5kV to ground on systems 24.9kV L-L and higher. But there are usually too many variable for this to be used universally.
