Old insulated hot wire with bare neutral wire.
Old insulated hot wire with bare neutral wire.
I just ran across this wire in Royal Oak Michigan. I found two bathrooms that had a duplex switch with receptacle. All boxes were metal. I tried to install a duplex switch with GFCI receptacle but the GFCI would not hold or test. The house was built in the 50s and I still wonder who would use this type of wire. The panel had the hot insulated wire to the circuit breaker and the bare neutral wire connected to the neutral bar. I advised the homeowner to have the entire house rewired and brought up to date.

I was working on a remodel today on some old government prefabs from the late 40’s.
I’ve worked on many of the other ones but most of them were built in the 50’s.
What is weird to me is that the wiring is that old braided cloth NM wire. But the only wire that was insulated was the hot and not the neutral. The neutral wire looked just like the ground wire in today’s NMB romex.
Have any of you came across this before?![]()
