On my current project I have a 2500 amp switch that has more than likely not been operated since it was installed. (1961 at best guess) should I have any concerns about this switch operating (opening and closing ) during a scheduled shutdown? We are removing the current overhead and replacing with underground.
I'd be very wary. I'd like to have a minimum of mechanical operations check, an insulation test, a contact resistance check - and a 40 foot pole to operate it from a distance.

so if you were to open that switch would you then close it and walk away?
or would you open it up to check that every thing fully engaged?
we check the spring type. if we have to operate one. but most cases we get the utility company to shut us down.
