is there a provision in the NEC about removing old unused wiring when replacing or demoing out old stuff? I remember reading about this in the past, but cannot locate a specific code article.
 
From memory only: Power wiring, no. Cable TV wiring and similar stuff, yes (i.e., either remove it or label it at both ends). Don't know specific article numbers, but it shows up several places.

Maybe it is in the building code... dunno.
(I just llooked too but didn't see it in the NEC)

But NEC aside, making any abandoned circuits unusable is a GoodThing.

If I can't verify both ends of a wire to mark them for future etc then out they go! eg: Snip all wire in a box at the clamp & remove any wire in conduit. Always.

edit: 110.12 (A) sorta back doors the requirement.

It is in 800.25, 820.25, and 830.25. As others have said, this applies specifically to communication wiring methods, not power wiring.

I know that there is a definition of "Abandoned cables" at 725.2; 760.2; 770.2; 800.2; 820.2; & 830.2. But this defintion is of a cable abandoned in place without benefit of a tag and not terminated at equipment. :smile:
 
I do conduit, so I get a little annoyed when we remove wires from a large conduit and inspector expects us to remove all the "abandoned" conduit... my solution was to pull 14awg and install "neon indicator lamp" or a handy box w/duplex. Most of those "abandoned" conduits have been "recycled" a few years later for another sub panel or piece of equipment.

Agreed. With very few exceptions there is rarely a good reason to demo conduit.

I've only had one questioned but the AHJ was happy with a 4S/cover set at each end. No wire or even string. YMMV
 
might look at 527.2(D) {2007} concerning temporary wiring._)
 
I've asked this question several times and have been told that the nonexistant requirement has to be complied with, several times. But I've never seen the requirement. I'd also like to see it.
