Wet bar sinks ? where the receptacles are installed to serve the countertop surfaces and are located within 1.8 m (6 ft) of the outside edge of the wet bar sink.
Changed in '05?

I don't have my '05 handy (and NJ has a month or so to accept/enforce)...what is the change?

Re: "old wives' tale" code

The sink requirement is only for dwellng units.

A better tale is: anywhere near water requires a GFCI, for example a bubbler (or for you non-Wisconsinites, a drinking fountain).

Re: "old wives' tale" code

Where does it say that 3-ways are required?

"Usually" does not mean required.

210.70(2)(c)
Where one or more lighting outlet(s) are installed for interior stairways, there shall be a wall switch at each floor level to control the lighting outlet(s) where the stairway between floors has six risers or more.

It does not say a 3-way is required, but what a waste to see 2 dead end single poles at each level for a single light.

The person using the stairs flips SP switch to the ON position at the bottom, then reaches the top, realizes they want the light off, flips the SP at the top to the ON position, then walks down the stairs, flips the SP to the OFF position and walks back up,turns on the hallway lights, then flips the SP for the stairway to the OFF position. They walk 30ft down the hallway to their bedroom, then realize they have no other switch to turn off the hallway lights, so they walk back thru the hallway and flip the SP to the hallway lights to the OFF position, then fumble in the dark for 30 ft, until finally reaching their bedroom door. :D

A waste or not....it is an "old wives tale" as it is NOT required.

Don't blame ME...blame "hurk" :) , read the post referenced previously.

We call it a bubbler in Rhode Island too. And here I was thinking we were the only ones.

I guess for #3 I have to buy some EMT staples or stapes? LOL

Re: "old wives' tale" code

Come on Celtic what ELECTRICIAN :p would not use 3 way 4 way 3ways on a stairway wih a landing that enters another area or 3 way 3 way when there are more than 6 steps. To say that well it doesn`t actually say 3 ways is redundent. There is a time and place for common scense and there is a time for stupidity.Seems this might be the place for the latter.
The law doesn`t say if you have 3 checks left that there is money in the account to cover them either  Or,shoot him it will teach him not to do it again GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Re: "old wives' tale" code

Peter D, What is a bubbler? In Little Rhody it is a bubbla.
Also, in the IRC it tells us that you need to be able to control the stairway illumination from each level, there is no mention of the number of steps or risers. Rhode Island ammends this to exclude bulkheads. In my opinion this includes dead end cellar & attic stairs. Pulldown stairs & scuttle hatches are exempt.

Re: "old wives' tale" code

Lest we forget "sw's are not permitted in closet's."[usually this was in reference to clothes closets].
Then I became an inspector.

Re: "old wives' tale" code

I have some to add.

1. No splice in a LB.
2. No NM in Commercial Buildings (Actually - that's a Oklahoma amendment, and it stinks!)
3. Can't mix "Low Voltage" and "High Voltage" Colors.
4. Pink & Purple are for travelers only.
5. Can't have a raceway that contain conductors with different voltages.
6. Multi-Wired branch circuits "cause" harmonics.
7. The 6'-12' rule applies to commercial receptacles as well.
8. Receps have to be "hammer handle high"
9. No light fixtures above a bath tub. (What about a recessed can???)
10. 277/480V won't hurt you as bad as 120V, 'cause it knocks you away. Only 120V will grab a hold of you.

A house roper wouldn't know, and a commercial guy would know better.

Re: "old wives' tale" code

I have had a Journeyman Electrician look me in the eye with a serious expression and say,

"The NEC is just like the Bible; you can make them say whatever you want."

I suggested that he spend more time reading them both.
