I wouldn't change anything. Once the device ears sandwich the plastic it will be stronger on pullout.

What ears ?
From the looks of the picture they are removed.:)

I believe he's saying do not remove the device ears... quite contradictory to his opening statement to not change anything, but I believe he was referencing the box mounting only.

PS: Not removing device ears would require the mounting screw to go through device ears, the plastic, and the box ears. That could present a problem when changing out a receptacle for future maintenance.

Your exactly right.
The box should not depend at all on any part of the device to keep it in place.
