Old Work Box Problem

For crumbling insulation, I have had good luck using colored heat-shrink. I push it as far up the conductor as possible (with conduit installations, you can even push it a ways up into the condut - it won't shrink up there, but it surrounds the conductor) and shrink it with a heat-gun. I use one of those plumber's soldering blankets to protect the other conductors.

If the HO is OK with a light, why not install a pancake box and a light with a reasonable size canopy?

I'm going over to the house on Saturday to see if I can do something useful with what's there. I contacted the HO the other day, and she said I should just do whatever needs to be done.

I though about a pancake box, but that would limit the fixture to something with a very big canopy since there are eight cloth-covered wires. Since there's no way to legally calculate fill on something like that, I don't want to wait and see if it flies with the inspector, only to have it vetoed.

We're pullin' for you. Remember, we're all in this together.

I went over to the house on Saturday as threatened, and the new plan was to bust open the ceiling as needed, put all the cables into a proper box, and install a dead-front cover. I wound up using a 1.5" octagon box with a bracket, then added a 1.5" extender to it, and screwed the whole thing into the nearest joist. I didn't need to make too big of a hole in the ceiling, and the HO wasn't upset about the damage, which I cleared with her before I got destructive.

There are before-and-after pictures in my camera. I'll post them when I get a chance.
