when installing a ceiling fan box in a sheetrocked "chicago" type suspended ceiling what old work metal box would you use? the screw expandable ones wouldnt work with that type of ceiling trying not to just open up the rock and mount to the structure with tsgb brackets

appreciate your thoughts

I grew up in a house that the owner of Chicago Metallic Sash had built in 1938. The company name was later changed to Chicago Metallic after they broadened their product line to include suspended ceilings and other building products.

What's it suspended from?
Shoot a rod and support the box from the rod.
If it was new work, we'd do it that way.
Not sure you can fit a shooter in that small hole.

Better be a 3/8 ths not a 1/4
Well in this case a 1/4" concrete anchor or some such is probably best, but there are shots that can handle double the fan load at least, but I'd be safe and use an anchor on second thought.

I am not sure why 3/8ths, I think 1/4 has well over 70# capacity.

It's not the dead weight that you need to worry it's the tensile strength and the anchor moving to much you need to worry about. Fans move a lot
