Re: Old work miscellaneous questions

"Blind drilling with a flex-bit is a crap-shoot."

They are great until your first $2,000 or more damage claim.
An EC buddy told me, it's just that you don't know how to do it, i never have problems, a year later one of his guys drills into $6,000 wall hanging, great tool, if you can afford it.

Re: Old work miscellaneous questions

I have a nice 3/4" Greenlee auger flex bit, but I only use it when I know what's on the other side. Mainly I use it when I have to cut a hole for an outlet and need to get the wire from the outlet to the basement. I know what's on the other end, but I have to use the flex bit since I can't open up the wall and get direct access to the floor where the hole needs to go. I won't drill from underneath unless I'm absolutely sure the hole will wind up where I want it to.

Recently I finished a kitchen remodel where I had to use the flex bit extensively even though the walls were opened up. The path from the panel to the kitchen involved lots of studs that were very close together, and the flex bit was the only way I could get holes in the studs. It was not easy. I had to pull seven cables (one 14-3, two 14-2, and four 12-2), so I had to make three horizontal paths of 3/4" holes in a vertical space of about 8". I was glad when I got the final homerun in.
