How do you comply with the code (314.17cx)when your installing a plastic device box in a concealed wall? I am not aware of a cable clamp for these types of boxes and how are you going to secure the romex 8 inches inside the wall? Is there a staple gun big enough for this? How do others handle comply with this?

Re: Old Work Question

Well,

I choose plastic boxes with integral clamps. Some of the clamps are made of metal and tightened by a screw; other clamp designs are made of plastic pieces press fitted to the body of the box; yet other clamps are part of the box body, straight out of the mold.

Use a box with a clamp for the cable sheath and that satisfies 314.17(C) and allows 334.30(B)(1) to work for you.

Of course, some would grab a big hammer and blast a hole, nail up a box and strap the NM. . .the customer is left with a lot of wall repair in that scenario.

Re: Old Work Question

The cut in boxes that are I use are Carlon & they all have cable clamps in them. Under Art.334.30(B)(1) Allows you not to worry about securing the cable if fished.

Re: Old Work Question

What I like to use for old work are 3.5 inch deep gangable metal boxes with ears and the Madison type fasteners that look like the Greek letter PI. I sometimes have to use 2.5 inch or 1.5 inch deep boxes.

There are some houses where nonload bearing walls have the 2x4s turned sideways with only 1.5 inches of hollow space.
