Older wire at weatherhead

I noticed something different about my weatherhead an wanted more information on its purpose an where it is to terminate.
Atop the weatherhead before my neutral enters it i have a #4 copper wire crimped to it.
It then runs down pipe to meter area.
.
Were these use a long time ago as a ground?
Is that part of wire considered to be "their side" ?

Local EMC's around here used to require bare copper from weatherhead thru meter to ground rod, tough to get it in sometimes because we weren't allowed to cut it

Also #4 for 200 amp service, even if going to ground rod

They stopped requiring running to weatherhead

Based on your other thread and the comment about the power company telling you to hook it back up, what you have is a local power company requirement, in my opinion. The NEC is, and has been, silent about a hookup like this.

I will ask the inspector im meeting with in the morning about removal of it .
I know they go by latest codes though .
Its terminated in meter box now.Before it was not attatched to anything on that end.
I wasnt sure if it had went to grounding rod or meter box .
Hopefully i can have it disconnected on their end before the weatherhead. An eliminate it totally.
New ground rod installed with #4 to neutral bar.

The GEC wouldn't go from the weatherhead to the meter and no further. That would accomplish nothing. It should be run (in some areas) from the weatherhead down to a ground rod or other electrode.

We have one POCO that still requires on overhead services that the GEC be tied to the neutral (grounded conductor) at the weatherhead and not in the meter base.
Then we have another that requires it in the meter and not the weatherhead. Either way is acceptable to the NEC.
