If I need to bury a 24V control cir. from Gen Set to ATS. I would bury it 18 to top of RNC. As per Dons previous posts 725.3 states only a handful of sections from 300 apply to class 2 cirs. 300.5 isn't one of them. 300.5 column 3 states " Nonmetallic Raceways Listed for Direct Burial Without Concrete Encasement or Other Approved Raceways". This doesn't say what is in the RNC. Therefore, even if the RNC only has a pull string, shouldn't it still be 18 to the top? How deep would you bury it in the crap soil (rocks) you dig in?

Chris,

725.52(A) ex.#2 is the only answer I can find. Basicly it says to change the

class2 or 3 circuit to a class 1 circuit, then, as a class 1 circuit the wiring

methods in chapters 1-3 are used. This would include 300.5. ( cover ).

Chris,
If the cable or conductor is a Article 725 circuit then 300.5 does not apply even when the circuit is used in conduit.

Don,

That seems to conflict with 725.25 Class 1 Circuit Wiring Methods.

' Class 1 circuits shall be installed in accordance with Part 1 of Article 300

and with the wiring methods from the appropriate articles in Chapter 3 '

Don, you are quite adament about 300.5, I would like to know what it is

that makes it so. 725. is not my strong suit so I'm ready to be schooled.

725.25 is for Class 1 circuits. This is a Class 2 application, in part II, which does not reference a burial depth requirement

Chris,
300.5 is not listed anywhere in Article 725 that I know of.
725.3 Other Articles
Circuits and equipment shall comply with the articles or sections listed in 725.3(A) through 725.3(G). Only those sections of Article 300 referenced in this article shall apply to Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 circuits.
Without a specific reference to 300.5, it does not apply to any Article 725 circuit.

Regarding the OP question.

I would say that no. A conduit does not become an electrical conduit until we put the wires in it. Prior to that, the conduit could be intended to carry water, (and be covered under a different code), or to be used as a voice tube.

On a side note: Regardless of the legality, I would still burry the conduit at the appropriate depth for a power conduit. I do not want my low volt or phone conduits dammaged any more than I want my power conduits damaged.
