I would not call him a dirt bag.

Just as likely that he figured the boss was out of it for an indefinite period of time and knew that was not a good thing, so was all but forced to go out on his own or starve.

I would agree with you IF he made a phone call and asked what his thoughts were on working for one of his accounts. He did not take the time to check and that makes him a dirtbag... IMO

I don't know the exact situation this guy found himself in. If the employer was hurt and unable to employ him anymore, I can't fault the guy for going out on his own.

As for stealing customers, if the guy was hurt and unable to work, just who do you think was going to service the customer? the customer was not going to wait around for him to heal up.

I am willing to bet that the real issue here is that the EC chose not to plan for a time when he would not be able to devote his full attentions to his business. IMO, the employer has as much obligation to the employee in this kind of situation as the employee does to the employer. These things are not a one way street.

I don't get the idea from rewires posts that the dirtbag ex-leadman was not still gainfully employed by him. Rewire was not working, but he had a 3 man shop working and the DIRTBAG began to steal his customers !!!!!!

Perhaps Rewire will clarify

Yes he was still employed by me and I had given no indication that I was shutting down the business,I simply trusted someone who turned out not to be trustworthy. He would go on our service calls and then before he left he would give the customer "his" cell # and tell them they could call him direct.

I was getting back to full time when he quit saying he was moving well I thought nothing more about it other than it came as a surprise. A few days later I was passing a store we did work for and I saw his truck outside I thought I would stop in and say hello well to my surprise when I walked in I saw him working on some light fixtures. A week earlier the store manager had called and said he wanted this work done but was in no hurry and we could fit it in any time. I talked to the store manager who said he did not realize he no longer worked for me and he would not use him again. I latter found out from a few other customers that he had been telling them just to call him directly on his cell.
I would expect flowers and candy at least before getting buggered like this. What this guy did is totally dishonest and unethical. If I walked in and found him working "on the side" for one of my customers he would probably find out what iaov means!!

The funny thing about it was that none of my bosses ever asked me what it meant. They all thought it was some obscure engineering term that they should know and didn't and they were too embarrassed to ever ask me about it.

Rewire, when he went out on his own, did he continue using your insurance and EC license? He may have pulled permits as an agent of your company. Also, petersonra, the guy in question is a dirtbag, and karma will find him. He could have asked for rewire's blessing on the matter. After all, those were his customers. The store owner made a good decision when he told rewire that he would not use the dirtbag anymore.
