I bought a new I-pad for unknown reasons. To light to make a boat anchor.

I thought I would try OneDrive and save a spreadsheet to it that I use frequently. The first upload worked, but after making changes to it on my laptop and saving, the OneDrive icon at the bottom of the page looks for changes, then comes back with an office file needs your attention. As far as I can tell there is a compatibility issue with earlier versions and it does not save. What version should I be saving it in? Hints?

Office 2010.

Without more information, my guess is the OneDrive online file was made available for offline use, 'modified' offline, and not yet sync'd with the OneDrive online file.

I have seldom used OneDrive, so processes aren't all that familiar to me. What I can tell you there is a OneDrive icon in my System Tray (Windows computer, of course), and right-clicking on it has Sync, Pause sync, and View sync problems options. The latter of those options on my computer is grayed out... so can offer no help beyond that.

There should not be a compatibility issue as it is only saving the file. I also have not used one drive but it seems that is not the issue

Not sure, but I think it is warning me that the version of excel I am saving the spreadsheet in may have some compatability issues with other versions. I nave no idea how I should be saving it.
What version of Excel was it created in?

What version of Excel was it modified in?

You mentioned iPad and laptop. Which did what?

Is laptop Windows or Mac?

What is the file extension?

You mentioned iPad and laptop. Which did what? I managed at one point to save a spreadsheet from my laptop to OneDrive, or at least I thought I did. Changes made on the laptop or the Ipad do not appear on the other.

Is laptop Windows or Mac? Windows 7

What is the file extension?.xlsx

It would help if I could manage to spend more than an hour at a time when learning something new.

Well nothing appears incompatible.

Back in the OP you mentioned a One Drive icon at the bottom of the page. Exactly what icon are you referring to. When I open a OneDrive spreadsheet in Excel, I don't see any OneDrive icon at all in the Excel window. There's a OneDrive shortcut on my taskbar (which is actually just desktop shortcuts because I hide 'em on my desktop) and a OneDrive icon in the system tray... which shows status when I hover the cursor over it. Mine currently reads "Files are up to date - last updated 41 minutes ago".
