Orangeburg Conduit Duct Bank

I am currently doing the design for a new underground duct bank system, and have been requested to remove portions of the old existing concrete encased duct bank. We have found that some of these old duct banks contain Orangeburg conduit which is an asbestos fiber type conduit. Has anyone else had to deal with this type of situation? I know that dealing with asbestos issues can get very expensive in a hurry. Any guidance is appreciated.

That is our ultimate goal. But we have been asked by the electrical superintenent to remove as many as possible since it causes problems with locates. Most of the removals will be laterals, so we aren't looking at removing large banks, but the asbestos issue could make even laterals cost prohibitive.

When I have come across it in the past the decision was made to abandon in place. You have to have an abatement crew remove it and as you said, that can be very expensive.
