I do everything I can to comply to every code, but I confess I regularly break this one ..............$0.20 blue sg nailup device box in dwelling, I use these for all my Telephone, Catv, Cat5e......IM Sooooo Bad...anyone else?

I just use a one or two gang 1/2" raised plaster ring for my LV outlets. I like the I like the extra room on the back side. I have used the plastic nail on's like you describe also. I didn't know they were a violation.

I'm with Tom on this... especially for options, speaker wires or motion sensors. A little loop makes a great target for a trac a tone.

Though not an NEC issue, it is hard to maintain the bend radius while keeping any sort of extra cable in a 20 CI box, exspecially when you have more than 1 cable in the box.

I just use the LV nail-on brackets (LVN1, LVN2)from Arlington.

Ok has anyone ever been knocked down because they used a p ring for LV ????I`ve seen 1000`s of homes done with these and never had a problem now not conforming to 300.4 D yes.

Says who? If it's listed for line voltage, why wouldn't it be listed for low voltage? Where is the logic in your argument?

Again, if you are going to make a statement like it's fact you need to provide a code reference or listing to back it up.

the topic of this, "daily violations" is exactly as you mention, things we do daily that are indeed violations, however everyone turns the other cheek, this specific topic of lv boxes got my attention when last year i got red tagged for cutting the back off these nm device boxes, as to have plenty of room such as the designed $1.25 ones. the inspector said I modified the box thus no listing, he was right, however I pointed out to him they weren't listed for LV with or without a back. I agreed to stop cutting off the backs, now I just enter the top hole, exit the bottom hole, then at trim, fish it out. He was'nt prepared to try and stop every contractor, (audio, video, security, ect...) from using them. (even though for LV we must use a listed box for LV ) and yes they sell em.........
are there any other things as this some of us do daily that are either know violations or borderline, that we all just look away at....

it seems that my last post was incorrect, nm and min. 14/2 is only for boxes with integrel clamps, I can find nothing specifing conductor/cable types. I stand corrected, but back to the original topic of violations known or borderline, I doubt a plaster ring is listed for that use, however it is a listed item.......I think there is nothing wrong with using plaster rings this way, but I do belive its a violation

Here's my ever-day violation:

The sheet-rockers we deal with use the ol' "cover it with dry-wall and then try to find it with a Roto-zip" method of installation (apparently because no one knows how to read a tape measure anymore :roll: ). This means that no matter how carefully we install our boxes, after having a piece of sheetrock slammed against them, they almost never line up flush with the surface of the wall. This invariably leads to a violation of 314.20 because we don't install spacers unless the receptacle is mounted in wood.

I used to uncover my own boxes after the drywaller didn't want to go back through and find them. I would accidently on purpose miss a few times before finding the box, then I would push in on the wall, creating nailpops, bringing my box flush to the surface. They not only had a few wrong spots to fix, they had nailpops to fix to keep my cost down of purchasing extensions. :D

Two things we do all the time. And this is every contractor in nw florida. as far as I know. Nm cable pulled through pvc conduit in a slab and also plugs mounted more then 12 inches below a counter. living room side

It never ceases to amaze me that drywallers can cover up as much as they do.I also when cutting out a burried box pop the nails/screws to flush the plate.If there are just a ridiculous amount of covered items I have the gc call and let them know to return and uncover or a huge back charge will apply.

I guess they don`t know that there is a depth adjustment on a rotozip.I instead of folding the wires for the device,coil them and that leaves a nice space that usually keeps the rotozip from tearing them apart.
