Outdoor Outlets Required

I'm in the process of doing an independent living project & there are no outlets shown on the drawings for the living units on the ground floor that have patio's. My question is are they required? beings this is an independent living facility or does it fall ubder 210.52E? The engineer did'nt show any on the patio's.

If it is listed as R-2 occupancy and has exterior egress. You are correct that 210-52 E applies and would require an outdoor outlet.

I think it falls under the practical code, drawn or not , of course your going to need an outlet on the patio

Always be carefull of the phrases used in the spec's. " to be to the NEC or according to the local AHJ", these are usually boiler plate statements (I'm paraphrasing of course) These statements cover the engineer and the architect.

What they call it isn't as important as what it's classified as. Goindowner is right, it is still classified as "residential".

Point of interest.... NEC 2008 will require receptacles on all "balconies, decks, and porches" as per 210.52(E)(3), not just those at ground level. Only exception is if the usable area is less than 20 sq ft.

My guess is this will trip up lots of people doing weekend warrior deck projects...
