outlet receptacle distance from WALL?

Is there a maximum distance an outlet box must be placed away from a wall? I'm not talking height here, but distance from a wall (horizontally).

Aesthetics aside, I'm curious about the code.

Re: outlet receptacle distance from WALL?

A floor receptacle can be in any location in the floor. If the floor receptacle is being installed to meet the wall measurement for 210.52, then the floor receptacle can be no more than 18 inches from the wall.

Re: outlet receptacle distance from WALL?

Don't know that I'm following you. The minimum distance around walls for general purpose residential receptacles generally starts at 6 feet from a door then every twelve feet around the room. This is based on the fact that all lamps and other devices such as TV's have 6 foot cords so with a 12 foot spacing everything should reach without extension cords.

bega,

you can start from the first stud on the wall or up to 6' from there.

Sorry I'm not more clear. I want a wall outlet right near the corner of a room...when all is said and done, the BOX would be 1.5 inches away from a FINISHED wall. I have my reasons for this, but my electrician is telling me "that's against the National Code". He couldn't give me a "number of inches away it has to be, so...it sounded suspicious to me...so I'm digging around.

Everything else is good...I have plenty of outlets so the 12' rule is no problem.

It could be right against the finished wall as long as you could get the plate on.

Re: outlet receptacle distance from WALL?

Thanks for the answer.
This sounds suspiciously like a DIY question.
Well, if I can't convince my guy to do this for me, it may turn into that. I build webpages for a living. I know a little bit about electricity. I'm sure I could do this myself, but I've seen enough DIY websites to know that I'm no electrician. I hope that makes sense. :)

Re: outlet receptacle distance from WALL?

I am having a problem in believing any electrician would tell you this is a violation, for the record it is not a violation.Rather unusual and perhaps he has some reason your not stating as to why he wont do this.Simply hire another electrician and do what your qualified for.

Re: outlet receptacle distance from WALL?

I have no problem believing an electrician would come up with this.

Re: outlet receptacle distance from WALL?

bega,
I'm still a bit confused here

...do you mean to have an outlet NOT attached to the wall (hanging off by 1.5")??

Re: outlet receptacle distance from WALL?

Ok, so maybe I should have posted the WHOLE story earlier...but people are more prone to answer the quick and easy answers.

I'm finishing my basement. The city allows me to do everything, but they want to inspect the electrical before drywalling. This merely confirmed what I was going to do anyway...hire an electrician. I can wire it and make it all work...making sure it's RIGHT and SAFE is another thing.

It was after he got going that I thought of putting an outlet REALLY close to one corner. My computer desk has a 3" overhang on the end. An outlet placed under that would allow me to push my desk all the way against that wall...that way I can still "use" that outlet. Otherwise, I have to pull my desk out far enough to plug something into it.

When I told my guy I wanted to do that, he was already working (and I really didn't want to hire someone else to put in that last outlet). He said "that's against National Code". When I asked how close I could put it to the corner, he said he didn't know, "but it's more that an inch or two." Now, I don't know the code, but I know the Internet and figured the answer was here...somewhere.

Celtic, I'm sure I'm not explaining myself very well. Picture an outlet on the wall. It's probably a foot or so up from the floor (vertical measurement). It's also probably a 16"-18" or so away from the CORNER (horizontal measurement). I just want it REALLY close to the corner...still in the wall like normal, still a foot or so up from the floor, just really close to the corner of the room. There's another outlet about 18" away already...he's got it wired and it's good to go, I just want another one closer to the corner.

Again, thanks to everyone who helped me out here. I appreciate it!

Re: outlet receptacle distance from WALL?

As long as there is no more than 12 feet between them or more than 6 feet from start of wall it would be fine.Perhaps he simply did not want to change what he had started. To get out of it told you it was a violation. If thats the case it reflects poorly on him.

Re: outlet receptacle distance from WALL?

I see no problem in adding an outlet wherever you want it...the outlet is in the wall and is additional to code minimum.

Adding a seperate line to feed the several computers/routers/bells/whistles that will be on that desk is not a bad idea.

The bit about "off a finshed wall" is where my confusion set in.

Here's your answer: He was telling you to scram. He wanted to get done and out of there, and wasn't listening to what you wanted. :D

Re: outlet receptacle distance from WALL?

bega. Instead of putting the outlet under placed the outlet 3 in above the top of your deck. Also place your network ports at the same height. The reason I do this for my clients is so they don't have to crawl under thier desk to unplug anything. I have yet have one client not like this set up. Another way you could go is a power pole that both power and network cables can share and it would be installed between your desktop and the ceiling. If the electrican has not discussed these options with you I would find someone that can think instead of making excusses. He was low bidder right?

Re: outlet receptacle distance from WALL?

The 6 / 12 ft rule only applies to floor receptacles with in 18 in from the edge of the actual outlet to a wall or a railing. It can be in the middle of a room but it will not be counted as a required receptacale in that area,

Re: outlet receptacle distance from WALL?

This sounds more like his electrician was telling him to get the H--- out of his way. Some guys crumble under any kind of changes a customer wants.Me personally i have no problem with them changing there minds as often as they like ,assuming they have enough green to take care of me.When the green runs out so does the changes.
