Outlets in closet Required? Residential

So if there is a closet within the closet, you need the window.
We built a storage room (shelves on one side, closet on the other) that was too narrow to contain a bed, but had to put in an egress capable window because of the closet.

I had an inspection department try an make me do the same thing. I finally argued them out of it.

They wanted to call the room a possible bed room and I wanted to call it a dressing room or large closet. It really wasn't going to be possible to get a window in that room.

It does not specifically list closets, but it does at the end of the list state, "and similar room or area of dwelling units". Including area opens the interpretation enough for the inspector to include closets. Choose your battles wisely.

So what is your Closet similar too.....Living Room...;)

With smart's argument every area of the house would be required to follow the spacing rules for receptacles. I'm glad he is not an inspector- I would have to kill him. :p

I don't see how it could be construed as required by code, but I've installed at least 1 in every walk in closet we've done for years.

Sometimes for future security or structured wiring, sometimes because there was a crawl hole in the closet, or for chargers of all natures of things.

I market it as a "plus" feature. Costs next to nothing if you can do a back to back.

Making an argument FOR receptacles being required is not my intent. I was only attempting to explain the rationale behind the inspector's position.

However, from an architectural position, one could argue a closet is part of the room it adjoins, similar to a food and beverage pantry being part of a kitchen. Let the squabbling continue...
