Can I install an outlet above drop ceiling #1 used as plenum #2 not plenum but unheated.Wiring method is 12/2 MC with 4" sq.box w/raised cover not w/p.Municiple Bldg. Outlet for alarm system power.

I believe the answer you will get is yes but you cannot plug anything into it. :smile:

Read art 400.8 (5) somewhere in there-- don't have my book -- on uses not permitted of rubber cord.
 
Unless you are pluging in a Wall Wart. Then all is good in a non-plenum ceiling. I'm not sure about a plenum space.

It's not the receptacle above the ceiling that a problem,( it can be there for a service drop light) its the use of a cord permanetly plugged into it thats the problem.
 
just playing devil's advocate... why do you have to install plenum rated cable ties in a plenum but the plastic the receptacle is made of not have to be rated?

I understand that you can install a receptacle above a ceiling as long as nothing is permenantly plugged into it. I was just wondering if the receptacle itself is technically allowed in a plenum because it is plastic. Does it actually have a plenum rating?
