... We always use the in-use covers in this type of application, I do believe its required now by the NEC but may be corrected on that one.

We're still on 1999 here. :) :( 410-57(a) requires weatherproof (but not in-use) recept covers for damp locations. 410-57(b) leaves the cover type up to the homeowner in wet locations (because it's governed by the intended use of the receptacle...)

Damp locations do not require an "in-use" cover even in the 2005 NEC.

If the fan has a large base you can forget the fan rated box and simply secure the fan itself to the 3/4" pine ceiling.

No big deal iwire

One thing that does surprise me is that busman is quoting from the 1996 NEC, yes indeed 410.13 hasn't changed in the '05.

But Infinity's jurisdiction is still under the 1999 (I know you do have the '05 Trevor)

A closer look at the '99 reveals:

410.57(a) deals with damp locations "... shall have an enclosure for the receptacle that is weatherproof when the receptacle is covered (attachment plug cap not inserted and receptacle covers closed)"

410.57(b)(1) deals with wet locations "where the product to be plugged in is not attended while in use ... shall have an enclosure that is weatherproof with the attachment plug cap inserted or removed"

410.57(b)(2) seems to be the same as (b)(1) but that "the product will be attended while in use (e.g.,portable tools, etc.)"

Anyone have any idea why some jurisdictions are so far behind the times in adopting the latest NEC Code?
Are the good ol boys at the top that resistant to positive change?

Actually, we were under the 2002 NEC until April 2006. Now we're under the 2005 NEC.

TinCan,

I have the NEC's up thru 2002. It just depends which one I have at a given location. I only quote the 1996 when I am relatively sure it hasn't changed. We just changed from 99 to 02 in my commonwealth (VA).

Fair enough busman. So I'll ask my question again.

Well in my fair state, I sat through one meeting on adoption of 05 code. It lasted 6 hours and they weren't through arguing about the definitions yet.
But I've been told we'll by there sometime next year.

Now how is that for speed and efficiency? :)
