I have a fire rated cable system install that will be going from inside to outside. I have read somewhere, that outside is considered 12 inches outside the building envelope and does not require the fire rating. I am having trouble finding any code or documentation that says anything about a 12 inch buffer from the building to be considered “outside”. I would like to mount a stainless box directly to the exterior wall and penetrate the back of the box.
