The maximum circuit breaker size is 150% of nameplate current. However, a 45 amp branch circuit is not a standard size branch circuit so you are allowed to go 50 amps.
For type NM cable a 50 amp circuit requires #6 copper. Since SER cable is allowed to go 75 Celsius and every 50 amp receptacle that I have seen has 60/75 Celsius terminals, you could go #6 aluminum but you would be better off using #4 aluminum for this application.
