NEC reference for proper installation of a 120V 20 amp overhead branch circuit to a garage?

I was considering UF cable with a messenger wire, but should the messenger wire be grounded??

Is 12 awg UF (UV rated) zipped to a messenger wire across 60' code compliant if the messenger wire is not grounded??

Thank you.

In 250.184(A)(1) Exception 2
Bare conductors shall be permitted for the neutral of overhead portions installed outdoors.

But this is allowing the messenger wire to be the neutral. But I don't find anything that says a messenger wire MUST be grounded.

In 396.60 :
The messenger shall be grounded as required by 250.80 and 250.86 for enclosure grounding.

No enclosures here, so I think I am OK, messenger wire is not tied to ground!

Thanks all.
Sanity check appreciated.
I try to hash this stuff out wtih my wife but she runs away when I approach with NEC binder.

I think you are good.

I did a bunch of NEC searching on this....the closest to a NO was 396.30.

396.60, by it's refrence to 250.80 and 250.86 seems to indicate that the messenger should be grounded. Treating it as a raceway or enclosure for conductors.

Exactly.
I went and read 250.xx...and was like the guy in my avatar :D

Pay attention to the end of 396.30 and what you must not contact

If you consider the messenger wire an enclosure then it should be grounded per 250.80 or 250.86.

But I don't interpret 396.60 as saying the messenger wire now should be treated as an enclosure. I understand this to say if we have enclosures on the either end of this run, we need to ground the enclosures via the messenger wire.

Maybe I am off the mark??

Not buying it.

250.80/86 applies to "Enclosure, Raceway, and Service Cable Grounding".

100 does not indicate a messenger is a "raceway". [ An enclosed channel ...]

Not sure how I can not let the conductors touch any walls...
I will be passing through a wall at the house and at the garage.
