Over head BC to deteached garage

If you consider the messenger wire an enclosure then it should be grounded per 250.80 or 250.86.

But I don't interpret 396.60 as saying the messenger wire now should be treated as an enclosure.

Would you ground an eclosure or raceway containing the same conductors as you intend to install? I think so.

Are the conductors in the same close proximity to the messenger (metallic) as they would be when installed in a conduit?

I believe that's why those two articles are referenced.

If the uf were run in a ceiling and attached to steel girders you would not have to ground the girders. Would you???

Yea, I think it needs to be grounded.
Not sure how to keep this little 20 amp circuit simple.

Currently, there are two K&T wires hanging from the house to the garage.

I am thinking SEU up the side of the house, to this poor mans triplex (UF + messenger) and SEU at the garage.

That triplex cable is not listed, so it could be flagged.

Either way real triplex or UF+ messenger, I will need SEU at both ends.

I think Frizbee has a point.

I don't see it that way at all.

IF the messenger supported wire headed to a mast/enclosure, and the mast/enclosure was the support for the messenger...sure.

Imagine if you will that this is festoon lighting. Does the messenger need to be grounded?

I'm a little late to this party, but here's the booze I brought:

My take on the messenger is that grounding is pertinent only if the messenger is also a conductor. Note the differences in 396.30 between (A), (B) and (C).

I'd say if you're only using some bradied wire rope ('aircraft' cable) solely to support a wiring method, it doesn't need to be grounded.

Not long ago I installed a 20amp circuit to a detached Garage overhead. I use UF supported by a rubber coated steel cable as the messenger. I installed a couple of screw in insulators and used wedge clips to hold the messenger. I used pull ties to secure the UF to the messenger.

I did not ground the messenger as I could not see a way that it could come in contact with the ungrounded conductor.

I have a few photos that I think may show this setup.

Similar installation as the UF....So, I'm going with yes by my previous statements.

If you have a NECH...take a look at Exhibit 225.2.

If not, I'll cut to the chase:
Attachment of festoon lighting to fire escapes, plumbing equipment, or metal drain spouts is prohibited because the attachment could provide a path to ground.
Now while this is just commentary in the NECH, the intent seems to very similar to that of 396.30.

Do you agree?
