Is uf cable acceptable for an overhead feeder to a detached garage? The distance from the house to the garage is about 25 feet. The garage will only have a 120v circuit.

Re: overhead feeder to a detached garage

Yes, as long as the requirements in 340.12(9) and (11) are met (time to dig out the Code book). :D

340.12(9) under Uses Not Permitted, for UF cable

Under Art.340.12(1)&(11) says no. #1 says not to be used as service entrance cable which I know that it is not "service entrance cable" but a feeder cable but #11 says not as over head cable.

Re: overhead feeder to a detached garage

When UF cable is used as aerial cable it MUST be attached to a messenger wire and installed as messenger supported wiring under 2005 Code rules. See Article 396 and 340.12(11). 340.12(11) reads, " As overhead cable, except where installed as messenger-supported wiring in accordance with Part II of Article 396."

If your messenger wire is metallic, it must be grounded. For a galvanized steel wire I would use an AL/CU split bolt and Noalox(R), Penetrox(R) A, or Penetrox(R) A13 on the steel strands to ehlp prevent corrosion. If your inspector will accept a nylon messenger rope and you can prove that it is sunlight resistant, go with that. Leave a slack loop with either type of messenger. Steel stretches during the first year and the same can be said about nylon.

Cable ties that are sunlight resistant should be good enough for attaching the UF cable to the messenger.
