friends:

- we have an overhead door installed in a class 1 div 1 area. A control panel is installed adjacent to the door.
- The power has been installed per requirements of the area classifications.
- on both sides of the door, a compartment with a hinged cover houses all the belts and counterweight of the door.
also inside this compartments are intrinsically safe photoeye amplifier sensors. A cable extends from the devices to go back to the Control Panel. The cable runs through a tube preinstalled in the compartment with open ends.
- Also a limit switch in a Type 1 enclosure is installed above one of the compartments. inside this limit switch enclosure are gears and a shaft that penetrates the switch's enclosure.
- at the bottom of the door, an intrinsically safe air edge switch is installed. A coiled cable sticks out of the bottom of the door and has a metal cup covering at the end. halfway the compartment, an grommeted opening is provided. The metal cup cover goes over the opening and another cable from the Control panel went through the compartment and comes out of the opening to splice with the air edge switch.

MY questions:

1. Can the hinged compartment enclose the devices?

2. Can the photoeye sensor cable run back to the Control Panel without a raceway?

3. The limit switch is a given, it definitely needs a NEMA 7 enclosure. any comments on this?

4. Can the air switch cable splice be contained in the metal cup covering? Is a NEMA 7 enclosure required?

Please give me some suggestions so we can installed this door properly and safely in this area.

Thanks Comrades.

Need some more info.

First question that comes to mind is it C1D1 on both sides of the door? Which leads to the next question of whether the control panel is located in the C1D1 area?

The photo sensor appears to be rated for intrinsically safe operation, and yes the cable can be without raceway. However, for an IS circuit there is an IS barrier somewhere, likely located in the control panel. If the barrier is in the hazardous area, it must be sealed inside an explosionproof enclosure, and cable entry must be sealed.

And this leads to the question whether the switch circuits are IS...???

Yes the control panel is in C1D1 area as well. Both sides of the door are also in C1D1 area.

The air switch is claimed to be non-IS. Thoguhts?

Is the control panel an explosionproof enclosure?

Perhaps the better question, is the door system even rated for C1D1?

Is the limit switch inside the gear box in the one picture? Does it have a nameplate which says it's rated for C1D1?

The air switch, I really don't know. If it's connected to what appears to be a stretch cord, and wired behind what appears to be a wall plate cover, it surely doesn't appear to be using C1D1 wiring methods... but I'm a bit rusty on all the requirements.
