What size overhead cable (triplex aluminum) is required for residential feeders? Is it the same size for a feeder and a service? What table is used for reference? We have some conflict of opinions on this at work. Thanks, Paul

Check out Article 396 (it is short). After that, take a look at table 310.20. Keep in mind that the "standard" triplexed cable that electric utilities use is not a listed product and the conductors are covered, not insulated. We rate the conductors for 600 volts based on the manufacturer's ratings and we use the ampacities given to us by the manufacturers. In some cases, we have modified the ampacities.

Use our materials at your own risk, most AHJs will require that you replace it due to a lack of listing. :D
