Overloading Main Panel

The first thing I did was talk to the power co engineer. He told me that all subdivisions developed in (my area) past a certain date that the SE would handle 400A. My subdivision went in well after that date. It's underground.
 
In that case, I'd suggest leaving the existing panel alone, installing the new meter base, and installing a new panel for all new loads.

The caveat with the original suggestion of adding two 100a breakers to the existing panel is nuisance tripping of the main breaker.

That's pretty good DIY advise!
 
That's a definite 10-4 on the EC. I might could do the work, but the coordination between the EC, power co and inspector alone would be invaluable. My wife would kill me if we were out of power for a week.
