I have come across several electric furnace installations where the disconnect load lugs were used to make connections for the blower motor and multiple electric heat strips.

Attached is a specification sheet on a very common disconnect.

When looking at the Wire Range Table in the upper right corner, I would not read this as more then one conductor allowed under a lug.

For instance, you could have a single stranded 14 AWG to 2 AWG conductor under a load lug.

Please let me know if I am reading this correctly.

You are reading it correctly.
1 conductor only. if it allowed 2 it probably would read (2) 14-2

If the wiring is an integral part of the furnace then the NEC does not apply.
